Standard #3: Learning Environments
The teacher works with others to create environments that support individual and collaborative learning, and that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation.
Name of Artifact: Classroom Plan
Date of Artifact: February 4, 2024
Course: EDUC 230 - The Exceptional Child
Rationale:
I have included this artifact, Classroom Plan, under Standard 3, Learning Environments, because it shows my understanding of how environments can effect learning. In this artifact, I go in depth about the different spaces I feel are important for children to have in their learning environment and different resources I feel they need made accessible to them. The class layout included in this artifact shows different learning spaces that support children in the classroom both individually and in whole group times.

Reflection
What does this artifact represent about me as a teacher?
This artifact shows that I have an understanding of the needs of children in their learning environment. The layout highlights design choices I would make that would allow the students to collaborate with one another when needed but also be able to work independently when called for. My design plan also allows for space to work with me away from the other students. This would allow for small group time where I could do more one on one work with the students. My space also includes a "calm down corner" where students who need help regulating their feelings could go and be by themselves for a short period of time where it is quite and easier for them to focus and calm their bodies.

How does this artifact reflect my personal growth and strengths as a teacher?
Prior to this course, I did not realize how much it took to design a functional space for young children to learn and be successful in. It requires a lot more than just making the space look nice, but you also have to make sure you are creating a space that each student can work in and use to their advantage to become successful learners. It also depends on the students I will have in my classroom. One design will likely not work for every class I encounter. I have to be intentional with the space I design and keep every student in mind while doing so.

What skills do I want to improve in relation to this standard?
The skill I want to improve on in relation to this standard is I want to create a space that is functional for all students. Classroom plans will look different based on the children I have in my class. For example, if I have a student with a physical disability, I may have to alter my plan to be able to have a classroom that physically works for every student present. I want everyone to feel welcomed and included in my classroom and with a little bit of trial and error, I can make a space that is appropriate for all.
