Rationale:

      I have included this artifact, Environmental Factors Contributing to Literacy, under Standard 1, Learner Development, because this standard discusses the importance of understanding how learners grow and develop. This artifact discusses the importance of understanding how to teach all learners in your classroom, including multilingual and English Language Learners. Classrooms are filled with diversity and it is important as a teacher to understand developmentally appropriate learning experiences for all kinds of learners in the room.

Reflection

What does this artifact represent about me as a teacher?

      This artifact demonstrates that I am committed to creating a developmentally appropriate environment for all of the students I encounter in my classroom. It shows that I have taken the time to educate myself about educational practices to incorporate among multilingual learners and ELL's in my class.

How does this artifact reflect my personal growth and strengths as a teacher?

      This artifact demonstrates my commitment to continuing my education to ensure the most effective teaching practices for the students under my care. It is very likely that at some point in my career, I will have a student who speaks little to no english so being able to adequately educate those students just as well as the students who speak proficient English is crucial. Not only being able to educate them in academic content but in social, and emotional aspects as well.

What skills do I want to improve in relation to this standard?

      I want to improve applying this information into a class which I know will come with time because I have not had many opportunities to do so yet. I will continue to educate myself so that when the opportunity comes, I will be prepared to educate all students that come into my class.
